Lakeland Figure Skating Club skater Lainie Kuckkahn has achieved a rare status in the test structure of United States Figure Skating: U.S. Figure Skating Triple Gold Medalist.
Skaters can attempt tests in figure skating across five disciplines: Moves in the Field, Free Skate, Pattern Dance, Free Dance, and Pairs. Each discipline tests mastery of skills in 6 to 8 test levels of increasing difficulty. The tests culminate in either Senior or Gold level, and are comparable to earning belts in karate, reflecting years of practice and discipline.
According to U.S. Figure Skating, athletes pass around 30,000 tests in a typical year, but only 3 percent of Figure Skating tests are at the gold or senior level. Kuckkahn is the first Lakeland Figure Skating club member to achieve Triple Gold Medalist.
The Lakeland Union High School senior earned Triple Gold level in the Free Skate discipline August 17 at a test session in Wisconsin Rapids. She became a Gold Medalist when she passed Senior Moves in the Field in April last year, and became a Double Gold Medalist on July 21 when she passed her final gold level dance test at her home rink, the Lakeland Hawks Ice Arena. Kuckkahn’s coach is Elena Rodrigues.
Jake Suter named new Boys' Hockey Coach & Rink Manager at Lakeland
Lac du Flambeau native and recently hired Lakeland Hawks Ice Arena manager Jake Suter has been tapped to be the new man in charge of guiding the Thunderbirds after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the Madison Capitols of the USHL.
Lakeland approved the hire at Monday's board of education meeting. Suter replaces longtime bench boss Ken Thanig, who chose to resign last month.
"I took a job running the rink here in town and I spoke with (former rink manager) John Dwyer back in March and he said the position would be opening, so I applied for that," Suter said. "I ended up getting that job and it was just the right timing with the Lakeland coaching job opening. I decided to throw my hat in the ring and things worked out. I feel very excited and very fortunate about the opportunity." read more.....
