Coaching Requirements
Step 1: USA Hockey Registration Annually
Just as all players must, USA Hockey requires all Head & Assistant Coaches to register annually. Yes that means you need a new USA Hockey # every year. When asked what type of registration you are registering for, please select Player/Coach. Once you have received your new #, please email to our Registrar at lhiaregistrar@gmail.com.
Step 2: USA Hockey Background Screening
Background screening is required for all coaches. You must complete the background screening BEFORE you are allowed on the ice. Due to new requirements from the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (“USOPC”), USA Hockey will be implementing a national level background screening policy. This process has a $30 fee.
Step 3: SafeSport Training
ALL Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and Board Members must complete the USA Hockey SafeSport online training prior to being placed on a roster. SafeSport registration is free and is good for one year. After your initial SafeSport training, in many cases, all that is required is a quick "refresher" course that can be completed in around 20 minutes, each subsequent year.
Step 4: USA Hockey Online Age-Specific Modules
All Head and Assistant Coaches must complete online, self-paced Age-Specific Modules for EACH age level that you will be coaching. If you have completed an online age-specific module in a previous year, you do not have to re-take that module (please verify your expiration). Coaches completed modules can be found in the USA Hockey Online Coaches Certification list. The age specific modules for each level are as follows:
Step 5: USA Hockey Coach Education Program (CEP)
You must have an up to date Coach Education Program or CEP level certification for the level you are coaching.
All coaches must enter USA Hockey's Coaching Education Program at the 6U/8U clinic if coaching the 8U level. Coaches at the 6U/8U Level do not need to progress any further until they move up to a new age classification.
If coaching the 10U level, you must have a Level 1 certification.
Once a coach is at a CEP Level 1, you must continue your education with a coaching clinic each year until you are at Level 4. Level 1-3 certifications are valid for one year. Level 4 certification is valid for 3 years.
Review your current CEP level with the USA Hockey Online Coaches Certification list. Register for an available clinic at USA Hockey Coaching Clinics. CEP Levels 1, 2 and 3 clinics are now provided virtual.
